                                                  National Director Job Description

The position of executive director is in the general management category and requires leadership, initiative, and judgment far beyond the specific items that can be listed in this brief description. “Other duties as assigned” is the operative phrase.

The Director is responsible for the following areas.

1. Managing Staff:
a. Hire and assign workers to accomplish the tasks required by the Board.
b. Supervise workers to assure that tasks are completed in a timely manner.
c. Set pay ranges appropriate to the skill levels required.
d. Notify the Board if staffing level seems inadequate to the workload.
e. Promptly notify the Board of any major personnel actions.

2. Managing the Budget:
a. Propose detailed annual budget for the coming year.
b. Monitor income and expenditures. Adjust expense levels within the flexibility
allowed by the Board and the requirements of accomplishing the mission.
c. Have programmatic and staff options ready for unanticipated revenues
d. Alert the Executive Committee to unfavorable financial trends.

3. Board Support:
a. Oversee communication system among Board members and between Board and staff.
b. In conjunction with the president, organize Board meeting logistics.
c. Distribute significant documents to Board members both in preparation for meetings and between meetings as needed.
d. Respond to Board member requests in a timely fashion.
e. Program Implementation – Provide procedural detail for programs that the Board wishes to explore or implement.
f. Recommend both short and long-term organizational plans and goals.

4. Chapter Support:
a. Maintain chapter membership and leadership database and assign new members to appropriate chapters.
b. Monthly publish chapter membership lists.
c. Annually provide leadership, communications, recruitment and retention and fundraising training for chapters
d. Notify chapters of Board decisions and other relevant organizational and programmatic news.
e. Respond to chapter communications in a timely fashion.

5. Member Support:
a. Maintain a database of readily retrievable information on each member.
b. Respond to member inquiries in a timely fashion.

6. Internal Communications:
a. Supervise posting content to VFP social media channels.
b. Generate at least bi-weekly electronic newsletter to all members.
c. Oversee the publishing of a quarterly newsletter to all members.
d. Receive and distribute brief special reports to all members on VFP initiatives

7. Public Relations:
a. Supervise posting content to VFP social media channels.
b. Supervise staff in establishing relationships with news media.
c. Oversee press statements to the media.
d. Recommend appropriate members as spokespeople for press initiatives.
e. Represent VFP as necessary with the media and at public meetings and represent
the Board as directed.

8. Fund Raising:
a. Assist in developing and oversee a Development Plan, including but not limited to
an Annual Campaign, Moves Management, Planned Giving and donor
acknowledgement

9. Program Review and Development:
a. Evaluate the operation and performance of existing programs.
b. Identify new programmatic opportunities.

10. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
1. Experience working with veterans and veterans' organizations
2. Familiarity with all areas of Communications and Public Relations: social
media channels; writing statements and news releases; managing relations with
reporters and giving interviews; creating opportunities for publicity; working
collaboratively with board and staff to plan and implement internal and external
communications strategy; strong written and oral communications skills.
3. Familiarity with all areas of Development: creating and executing an annual
Development plan; creating and managing an annual budget
4. Must have experience with spreadsheets, google docs and other frequently-used
office programs
5. Preference will be given for candidates with veteran status

Compensation: Commensurate with experience
