Current Bills Related to VFP Priorities

Based on our Mission Statement, VFP has three main legislative priorities. Current legislative activities in these areas include:

  • End current wars and prevent future wars: Includes bringing all the troops home from Afghanistan by the end of 2015, ending military aid to Israel, preventing U.S. military intervention in Iraq and Syria
  • HR 1232 Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act Support this bill which directs the Secretary of Defense to significantly limit the transfer of military hardware to civilian police agencies.

  • HR 137 DRONES Act Support this bill to require an adequate process in preplanned lethal operations that deliberately target citizens of the United States or citizens of strategic treaty allies of the United States, and for other purposes.

  • HR 466  Support this bill to prohibit the Central Intelligence Agency from using an unmanned aerial vehicle to carry out a weapons strike or other deliberately lethal action and to transfer the authority to conduct such strikes or lethal action to the Department of Defense.

  • H Res 384 Support this bill calling for a formal end to the Korean War.

  • H.R. 3662 Oppose this bill that would prohibit President Obama from delivering on sanctions relief for Iran.
  • S. 792 Oppose this bill that would impose even harsher sanctions on Iran than currently in place.

     

  • Reduce and redistribute military spending: These issues are addressed through annual appropriations bills, usually in the spring, and annual authorization bills, usually in the fall. This issue is also driven by amendments to these larger bills. The amendment process can move very quickly.

  • Heal the wounds of war in U.S. veterans and overseas.
  • S. 165 and H.R. 401 Detaining Terrorists to Protect America Act of 2015 Opposethese bills which make if more difficult to transfer or release prisoners at Guantanamo.

  • H.R. 2114 Victims of Agent Orange Relief Act of 2015 Support this bill which directs the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide assistance for individuals affected by exposure to Agent Orange, and for other purposes.

  • S 1856 Support this bill to provide for removal or demotion of employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs for performance or misconduct that is a threat to public health or safety and to improve accountability of employees of the Department.
  • S 1082 Oppose this bill to provide for the removal or demotion of employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs based on performance or misconduct, and for other purposes.  It is seen as en effort to weaken unions.
