Be the Change Book Club

Join VFP’s “Be the Change” book club!

The purpose of this working group is to explore with others, via discussion of books and other media, in a safe and open social space, the ways in which colonization, racism, gender bias and other biases show up in our lives and in our activism. Growing our awareness of how our words and actions reflect the society we live in, and how our personal behaviors contribute to the culture of Veterans For Peace, allows us to be more accountable to ourselves and others, and increases our individual agency to effect change. Join us for meaningful discussions geared toward personal and organizational growth, in a mutually supportive atmosphere reflective of the VFP mission of “building a culture of peace.”

Upcoming Meeting Schedule

Sunday, February 25, 2024 | 1:30 Pacific | 2:30 Mountain | 3:30 Central | 4:30 Eastern

This is a great time for new people to join our group, as we begin discussing a new book – I Never Thought of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times by Mónica Guzmán. This book promises to be a practical followup to the one we just wrapped up – John Brown Childs' Transcommunality: From the Politics of Conversion to the Ethics of Respect (highly recommended!).

The reading assignment for this meeting is Part I (pp. xv–37). [Note: Our meetings start with a quick check-in and usually last around 2 hours, with a break in the middle. It's okay if you can't stay for the whole time, and people who are seriously interested in the current book are encouraged to attend even if you haven't had time to complete the assignment; our discussion style is circular and allows people to catch up as they can.]
