Portland, ME - Chapter 1

NAME OF EVENT:  Veteran's Day Parade
LOCATION OF EVENT:  Portland, Maine
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:  Since 1992 our chapter has participated in the Portland, Maine American Legion/City of Portland sponsored Veterans Day Parade. We walk with a 14' Maine Veterans For Peace banner and invite the activist community to walk with us. Over the years we have had Women in Black, IVAW, MFSO, Peace Action Maine, Brunswick Peace Works and many other individuals and organizations walk with us. Traditionally we have the largest contingent in the parade. We have always received an excellent ovation with the few verbal exceptions of course. In 1995 Gerry Genesio was a featured speaker as Veterans For Peace's Children of War Rescus Project was in full swing. We have since asked each year to speak again but to date have been turned down. There have been some disquiet within our Chapter because of our participation in this obvious glorification of war event however we are the only group in the parade to bring the word "peace" into what would otherwise be a obsequious peon to war.

A new banner "Veterans For Peace is against war - all war. Get out of Afghanistan" made for an anti-war event on November 6th will be used in event this year.

St. Augustine, FL - Chapter 136

NAME OF EVENT:  Memorial Service for the Constitution
LOCATION OF EVENT:  St. Augsutine, FL
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:  On September 28th, 2009, the Constitution died in St. Augustine, Florida after a ten plus year battle with an extremely viral strain of fascism. The Constitution was born September 17th, 1787 in Philadelphia with a multitude of congenital problems, including slavery. She endured 27 major surgeries during her brief life, ten immediately after birth. Although she remained severely handicapped by imperialism and greed, there had been great hopes for what she might have accomplished in her life. She is survived by her children Freedom and Justice, who are, unfortunately, suffering from the same virus that killed their mother.

A memorial will be held in St. Augustine in front of Castillo de San Marco on November 11th, at noon, followed by a short funeral procession and graveside service. Everyone who knew the Constitution is invited to participate. Due to her large number of friends and admirers we ask that you contact us if you plan to attend. We ask that you not send flowers but a donation can be made in her name to Veterans For Peace. 216 South Meramec Ave, St. Louis MO 63105.

Cleveland Heights, OH - Chapter 39

NAME OF EVENT:  VFP Readings
LOCATION OF EVENT:  St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 2747 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Heights, 44106 (corner of Fairmount and Coventry). Free parking.
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Veterans for Peace local Chapter 39 will commemorate Veterans Day with a reading of letters and quotes from soldiers and their loved ones dating back to the Revolutionary War. Mary Reynolds-Powell, Chapter 39 president, cited president Dwight D. Eisenhower's statement in April, 1953, as setting the program theme: “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, and the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.” Two of VFP’s missions are to increase public awareness of the true costs of war, Powell said, and to abolish war as an instrument of national policy. The original armistice ending World War I was signed at the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month of 1914, and later came to be known worldwide as Armistice Day. In 1954, President Eisenhower named November 11 as Veterans Day, now one of America's 11 national holidays.
