After a ceremony at sundown, led by Santa Barbara Mayor and VFP Associate Member Marty Blum, candles will be lit around the perimeter of the memorial. On Monday May 26 Colonel Ann Wright (USA Retired) will visit and join our chapter in a series of Memorial Day events, in collaboration with other veterans organizations.

St. Simons Island, GA

NAME OF EVENT: Memorial for Georgians Killed in the Iraq War
LOCATION OF EVENT: Casino Pool (southside) in Neptune Park, St. Simons Island, Georgia
DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: GlynnPeace held its first memorial exhibit at Mary Ross Park in October 2007 (see attached photos). A month later, it was held for 2 days at Hanover Square in downtown Brunswick. The last exhibit was at the State of Change Tour Concert at the Gazebo in Mary Ross Park on April 5, 2008. This event was organized by the GlynnPeace - Youth Division. The exhibit consists of white stakes and camo helmets with the hometowns of the soldiers. Our first exhibit honored 122 Georgians and in April the count was 127. As of May 18, the count is 129.

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT: Madison VFP will again erect a memorial to 4,500+ US dead in the Iraqi-Afghanistan wars. Volunteers will be needed both to assemble additional tombstones in mid-May, as well as to erect the stones on Sunday morning, May 25 at Olbrich Park on Madison's near east side. Volunteers will also be needed to to answer questions about the project and to provide a neighborhood watch at the site each night to safeguard the display.

Speakers include Robert Koehler, an award-winning Chicago journalist and nationally syndicated political writer for Tribune Media Services, Fran Wiedenhoeft, Iraq veteran and VFP chapter coordinator, and Iraq veteran Dan Kaufman.
This event is free and open to the public. Last year over 300 attended. Chairs will be set up in the park near the Gates of Heaven building and the memorial to the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Music will also be provided. The event will conclude with a flower ceremony honoring the memory of the volunteer Abraham Lincoln Brigade, including Clarence Kailin, a founding member of Madison Veterans for Peace.
