Occupation Project Update -Jury Acquits Bangor Peace Activists

occupation project Doug Rawlings and Dudley Hendrick, both members of Chapter 001 of Veterans For Peace, were part of a group of six activists that were found not guilty of criminal trespass on Wednesday. The six were arrested as part of the Occupation Project inside U.S. Sen. Susan Collins' office in the Federal Building in Bangor, Maine. Read their statement here.

District Attorney R. Christopher Almy said the following: "I think that the public in Maine is so disgusted with the war in Iraq that they demonstrated their disgust with this verdict...and, that they are upset with [Sen. Olympia] Snowe and Collins for getting us involved in this debacle."

Chapter 039 Remembers 4000 Dead

chapter 39 On the day after the official tally of the 4,000th casualty of the Iraq War, several organizations rallied on the Veterans Memorial Bridge in Cleveland, Ohio to commemorate this sad milestone and call for an end to the war. Among them were members of Chapter 39 Veterans for Peace. Organizers and volunteers recorded the name of each casualty on a sheet of paper and placed each sheet into a clear plastic holder which were then strung together and a stretched from one end of the bridge to the other. Tragically, there were enough names for both sides of the bridge. See photos of the event.

VFP Vice-President Arrested in San Francisco - Her Story

sharon kufeldtSharon Kufeldt serves as the Veterans For Peace Vice-President. Daughter of a Marine from WWII and Korea, she joined the Air Force during Vietnam.

To commemorate the 5th year of the occupation of Iraq, Sharon participated in a die-in outside Senator Diane Feinstein's office in San Francisco. Across the city of San Francisco, over 165 people were arrested.

"There comes a time, when the heart is moved by compassion, to join the likes of Daniel Ellsberg and his wife, Fr. Louis Vitale, Ying Lee, and others. My personal mission this day was to experience the first stages of civil disobedience. I wanted to sit - or actually lay - in the street with a gathering of others - for a few minutes to explore the edges of this phenomenon."

Chapter 099 - Asheville, NC Helps Orphans in Afghanistan

orphanage

In 2003, the Asheville, NC Chapter of Veterans For Peace voted to help two orphanages in Laghman and Jalalabad, Afghanistan. They raised over $20,000 to help provide kitchen equipment, washing machines, and much needed daily supplies to the orphans. Many of these students are able to continue their education thanks to the hard work of the Asheville Chapter.

The project recently received an additional $17,000 that was raised through members of Veterans For Peace that will be used to provide a badly needed new roof.

The Asheville Chapter has been working with LIFE for Relief and Development, the same organization that assists the Iraq Water Project with providing clean drinking water to Iraq.

michael mcphearsonSt. Louis, MO Board of Alderman Vote in Favor of Ending Combat Operations in Iraq

St. Louis, Missouri's Board of Alderman voted in favor of passing Resolution 339 urging "cessation of combat operations in Iraq and the return of U.S. troops."

Sponsored by Alderman Terry Kennedy, the resolution gained many co-sponsors and passed with 23 votes. Veterans For Peace Executive Director, Michael McPhearson, spoke to the Intergovernmental Affairs Committee in favor of passing this legislation.

This makes St. Louis the first city in Missouri to "urge the United States Congress and the President to immediately commence an orderly and rapid withdrawal of United States military personnel from Iraq," as well as to assist the Iraqi people to rebuild and to redirect financial resources for war to address public needs within our cities infrastructure. There are over 280 cities nationwide that have passed similar legislation.

VFP Chapters Working to Raise Money for Winter Soldier

raising money for winter soldier

Veterans For Peace chapters across the country are helping to support IVAW's Winter Soldier by holding house parties to raise much needed funds. So far, almost $20,000 has been raised by VFP members and supporters. To learn more about Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan visit www.ivaw.org/wintersoldier.

Rochester, NY - Chapter 23

We had our showing of Winter Soldier promotional video at our house party in Delray Beach. We collected $400.00. Included in the photo is IVAW members Camilo Mejia and Marc Reid and VFP member Doug Ryder.

Maine - Chapter 1

Despite a raging snow storm, Maine VFP - Chapter 1 - hosted a successful fund raiser to support the Winter Soldier. We raised over $1000, and expect additional donations to come in from those unable to attend due to the storm.

At our party, we heard an account from former Naval Lt. Becky Farley about her witnessing the Shock and Awe invasion from the deck of an Aegis destroyer, which fired the first strike on Iraq with eleven Tomahawk missiles. That was enough for Becky to reconsider her plans to make a career of the Navy. She is now a member of IVAW, and hopes to testify at Winter Soldier in Washington.

Lehigh Valley - Chapter 152

VFP, Ch 152 held their fundraiser this past weekend, Saturday and Sunday. We raised $1372.00 which was mailed to IVAW today. On Saturday, Sholom Keller and Frank Radosin attended with Sholom speaking. Dave Lindorff, who co-authored The Case for Impeachment, came on Sunday. We showed the promo video both days.

Other VFP chapters have contributed to this fund, including the Washington D.C. Chapter 16 which raised over $3000 and the Boston Smedley Butler - Chapter 9 which raised over $13,000!

boise event

Boise, Idaho: "Shut Down Guantanamo Military Prison" Event

January 16, 2008

January 11, 2008 - Some 70 + people attended this event in Boise. Most were wearing orange armbands or clothing and carried various signs and flags expressing thoughts about torture and illegal detention without due process of law. There were three speakers followed by two musicians who played guitar and got the crowd signing along with them some good protest songs.

A group of 10-15 folks escorted our four shackled and hooded prisoners in orange jumpsuits around all three floors of the temporary State Legislature Annex Building (Our State Capital is being renovated through 2010). Several of these folks also carried signs that protested the use of torture and illegal detention at Guantanamo Prison.

The event was covered by two local TV stations which broadcast a quick sound bite from our event on the local evening news later that evening. The event was not picked up in our local paper which is not unusual for Idaho peace and justice events even though over 25 different broadcast and printed media outlets were informed of the event in advance by the co-sponsoring groups. However, it was a good event which attracted about 3 times more poeple than last years event. So torture and bad behaviour are beginning to rise to the surface, even here in Idaho.

These actions were a part of the Witness Against Torture Campaign to Shut Down Guantanamo.

yellow rose of texas busYellow Rose of Texas Bus Destroyed by Fire

January 14, 2008

Veterans For Peace member, Jim Goodnow, has been traveling with his Yellow Rose of Texas bus since September of 2005. Friday night, while at a New Jersey truck stop, the Yellow Rose of Texas bus caught fire and was destroyed. Jim was the only person on the bus and escaped safely. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Most recently, Jim and the Yellow Rose appeared at the VFP National Convention in St.Louis, traveled the east coast with members of Iraq Veterans Against the War, and was keeping the war visible in New Jersey during the Presidential primaries.

Evansville, IN VFP Chapter 104 Holds "John Lennon Night" Fundraiser

January 8, 2008

larry miller and gary may

Larry Miller was inspired by John Lennon and devastated when Lennon was murdered. Lennon's death prompted Miller to throw himself into his theretofore casual interest in music and Lennon's history. In subsequent years, Miller participated in and established several local bands and became known locally as "Electric Larry".

For the past several years, Miller assembled his musician friends and hosted a "John Lennon Night" at area bars on December 8, the anniversary of Lennon's death. When the local Veterans For Peace chapter was established by Miller and other Evansville area veterans, John Lennon Night became a Veterans For Peace sponsored event.

The night is seen as an outreach opportunity and for fund raising. The night includes good music, poetry, readings, rants, an open mic and opportunities to connect/reconnect with the progressive community in Evansville (environmentalists, antipoverty advocates, social justice advocates, etc.) . It's all free with cash bar and, for the past two years, snacks provided by VFP members. Fundraising has included collecting money for veteran phone cards, support for homeless veterans and chapter fundraising. It's a good opportunity to highlight chapter and other initiatives, such as our Peace Eagle raffle, MoveOn petition against invading Iran, etc.

For the past two years, the event has been held at the Art Colony Gallery. This is an art gallery in an area of the city recently designated as the "Arts District". The gallery owner and district officials are ecstatic with Lennon Night because of the traffic and awareness it brings to the nascent art district.

The event usually attracts print media attention and an increasing number of people in the community associate VFP Chapter 104 with this event. Attendance, always very good, has grown precipitously in the past three years (coinciding with the chapter's overall community involvement-parades, informational presentations, letters to the editor, etc.). Advocates also routinely send email invitations/announcements to their email lists.

Oberlin Declares War on War

October 15, 2007

oberlin The original sponsors & main organizers were the Oberlin Chapter of Veterans for Peace, Oberlin Peacebuilders (the local umbrella peace group), & the Oberlin Peace Activists League (the major student activist group). About 300 non students & 70 students attended; the main speaker, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, 9th Ohio Congressional District, gave a detailed, most informative, and powerful anti-war address. She stressed, to a most supportive audience, how Congress, the U.S. military, the media,& the U.S. Constitution have all been hijacked by the fears generated by the Bush Administration's uninhibited willingness to mount lying attacks upon all opponents of the war or Bush's policies. It should be noted that Representative Kaptur was one of the few people who voted against the Iraq war from the very beginning. She impressed us all with her knowledge, passion and eloquence.

Veterans For Peace Recognizes Iraq Moratorium

September 21, 2007

iraq moratoriumThe war and occupation of Iraq has contined for over four years. Today marks the beginning of the Iraq Moratorium. With the idea stemming from the Vietnam Moratoriumin 1969, every third Friday, people are encouraged to break from their daily routines, step outside their comfort levels, and do something to end this war.

Some people will wear armbands, college campuses will stage walkouts, people will refrain from buying gas, and Congress will be flooded with phone calls.

This photo was taken outside the Veterans For Peace national office in St. Louis, MO. A coffin, pair of combat boots, jacket, and yardsigns were placed outside. Behind the tribute to the fallen troops is the Veterans For Peace flag and the U.S. casualty count. If you or your chapter participated in the Iraq Moratorium, please send photos and stories to breznicek@veteransforpeace.net.

Denver VFP Members Participate in Operation First Casualty

July 9, 2007

Most reasonable people, regardless of their political persuasion, are aware of the reality that the first casualty of war is the truth. Any person who has actually participated in a war, knows the second casualty is the plan. The list of casualties and costs escalates from these first two items to include killed and wounded soldiers on both sides, killed and wounded civilians on both sides - often in far greater numbers than combatants, despite propaganda to the contrary by both belligerents - and of course the losses suffered by the families of the military and civilian victims of war. Let us not forget also, the cost to national treasuries, and the cost to taxpayers.

July 4th, 2007, Independence Day for the United States of America, was celebrated in very non-traditional way by a group of veterans of the American occupation of Iraq. Members of the Denver chapter of Iraq Veterans Against the War staged a moving street theater production in downtown Denver.

078 - Gainesville, FL

May 28, 2007 - Arlington in Gainesville, The Mile Long Memorial

We decided to do this the first week of May, got permission from the city and put it together in 3 weeks. The youtube shows the making and planning for setup and the next link shows pictures of the finished product and the last a picture from today's paper. We set it up on a 1 mile stretch next to Westside Park. We had totals through Saturday 3456 Iraq and 396 Afghanistan veterans so at 4 abreast it was a mile long with each row 1 pace apart. They were in order by date and a sign for "Mission Accomplished" was located in the near part of the asteroid belt. It was up at sunrise and we took it down at dusk. The view was mind boggling because from "Mission Accomplished" you could not see the end.

The display as you can see below was one mile long and 4 tombstones wide. We put it up starting at 4AM and took it down at dark. It was extremely well received by the many people that visited during the day. We also had a Cost of War display on the opposite side of the road with 12 posters and personal cost of war banners that people could sign. I would estimate that close to100 people worked on this event between putting it up, monitoring it, providing food and taking it down in the evening.

118 - Nikko Schoch Chapter - Salt Lake City, Utah

February 24, 2007

"The military needs to know that we will not rest until this issue is resolved," stated G.I Rights Hotline Counselor and former Utah Air National Guard TSgt Trish Withus at recent Women in the Military Panels held in Orem and Salt Lake City, Utah. The panel titled "Women in the Military: The Good , the Bad and the Ugly", was the brainchild of chapter 118 activist and retired Army Reserve Lt.Col. Cecily Light. Cecily organized and facilitated the panel with Trish Withus, Suzanne Swift's mother Sara Rich and former Army Medic Leslie Watson.

The first panel, held at Utah Valley State College in Orem, Utah was sponsored the Gender Studies Club, Gender Studies Program and Peace and Justice Community. Carmell Hoopes-Clark introduced the participants and said,"War creates situations...where the horrors such as those like Suzanne Swift happen with impunity. War destroys people. We must make the system more accountable," she concluded.

Sara Rich told Suzanne's story of sexual abuse by her team and squad leader while assigned to a military police company in Iraq. "I was told by them that they would take care of her. The system failed miserably," she concluded. Sara gave an update about Suzanne on her AIT training in Virginia, and her transfer to Ft. Irwin later this summer.

Former army medic and UVSC student Leslie Watson said,"It takes more to be a woman in the military."

The panel then took questions from the audience including current chairperson of the UVSC ROTC Department Major O'Reilly and her staff.

The panel then moved to Salt Lake City, where minus Watson, they were sponsored by chapter 118 and the Wasatch Coalition for Peace and Justice. A vigil was being held outside the auditorium for the victims of the trolley square shootings two nights previous, so attendance was minimal and media coverage was non-existent.

Withus, who handles women's issues for the Salt Lake City Branch of the G.I. Rights Hotline sponsored by chapter 118 ,summed up her thoughts on the panel. "I think the three of us, (Sara, Cecily and I) made a wonderful team, and bonded quickly. Awareness is the key to sexual abuse by the civilian population and military community. Studies can be done, classes given and programs put in place, but until the military prosecutes abusers, then it will stop. I will gladly speak again ,if the forum finds another place to speak," she concluded.

Sara Rich tells UVSC ROTC Chairperson Major O'Reilly about her daughter Suzanne Swift's sexual abuse as panel organizer Cecily Light and Trish Withus listen.

049 - Indianapolis, Indiana

December 31, 2006

Last night, New Year's Eve 2006, several people associated with Veterans for Peace, Inc., Chapter 49, Indianapolis and their supporters held a vigil on the south steps of Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis and read the names of the 3000 Americans that have been scarified to the Bush Administration's illegal, immoral war of aggression against a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us. All that took part in the event were moved at very deep and spiritual level. It is a difficult task to remember and honor the dead. And when you read page after page of names of young people that have been sacrificed on the altar of Bush's death machine, it tears at your soul.

Wednesday at 11:30 AM in front of the offices of Senators Lugar and Bayh there will be a reading of the names of the Indiana dead, with a tolling of the bell for each person lost.

027 - Minneapolis, MN

November 11, 2006

The morning sun helped keep the sharp chill off of the forty plus present at the chapter’s Armistice Day memorial held at the “First Shot Memorial” on the capitol mall Saturday, November 11. The group remembered the fallen from previous wars and the current Iraq occupation.

Wayne Wittman introduced Molly Culligan who read from a Martin Luther King, Jr. biography that recounted his condemnation of the administrations’ involvement in the U.S. war in Vietnam. Anyone who arrived after Molly started could have thought she her remarks were about the current state of the Bush occupation policy. The bell was then struck eleven times at 11 a.m in honor of the original intent of Armistice Day reminding those present of the promise of the “War to end all wars.” John Varone read the names of the forty-four Minnesotans killed in Afghanistan and Iraq since President Bush ordered the attack on those two countries.

Jack Rossbach remembered his four old friends¹ names that are on the Vietnam Wall and one that is not. The one not listed returned and later took his own life. Dr. David Harris reviewed briefly his recent experience in Louisiana that followed up his earlier volunteer efforts there after Katrina. He highlighted the racial policies that still prevail.

055 - Joan Duffy Chapter

November 13, 2006

The turnout for the parade was terrific; VFP was clearly the most visible presence in the audience for the ceremony at the Bataan Memorial, with VFP flags and signs in every part of the crowd. The reception for the VFP contingent was overwhelmingly positive and welcoming.

And it would be impossible to thank Tim Origer and Joe Mowrey enough for being the driving force behind the Iraq/Afghanistan Memorial Installation. The tabling crew on the Plaza reports that at least a thousand people came by during the day before the crew took down the banners.

Among the unexpected benefits of the Installation was a visit from the governor. Bill Richardson was very impressed with the memorial and asked Tim whether it would stay up. Tim responded that we would be taking it down at the end of the day, "... But it would be nice to put it up in the Round House rotunda some time." The governor agreed; so Tim asked when we could do it. "During the legislative session," the governor replied.

November 4, 2006

Since we're not allowed into the Veterans Day Parade in Milwaukee, we decided to get in their faces. VFP and VVAW had the help of many peaceful people to install Arlington - Great Lakes, in a park where the parade makes a 90 degree turn. Everyone in the parade was forced to look at it.

I believe we had almost as many people helping to set up the display as were lined up to watch the whole length of the parade. [ News Story | Pictures ]
